It's not an original idea. I've seen this in a japanese book somewhere, I remembered it was simple and easy and since I had to do a Christmas gift swap last week, I thought of making this for my partner. It was a big hit and everybody wants one now :). My talented cousin came over to drop off my Christmas cakes order and she requested one for herself. And in return, she modeled for me :D. This year, Misfits' teachers also got this as a Christmas present :) but I forgot to take pictures. You can wear this many ways! For more variations, add more buttons :). See picture and link below for the tutorial.
NOTE: Some of the readers asked me about the sizing for this. I've realized my cousin is super skinny :), so if you're like me...you might not be able to do the cross over style, unless you make the fabric a little longer and wider. It is best if you try draping the fabric on yourself. You can always add more buttons to make more variations...you can also add buttons along the horizontal length of the fabric as well :)...it would give more variations.

You can even use it for a scarf ;) |

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this! I made my own cape but was wondering if you place the buttons right behind each other or if you shift them a bit? Also, would you be able to explain to us how you buttoned your cape? I really like having all of the options but can't figure them out. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteHi Lia,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tutorial, I was inspired by it and I've made my own version.
I've taken pictures of the result, the "model" is Helena, the recipient of the cape (pics taken with my mom's camera, so they are now on her flickr): http://www.flickr.com/photos/24290804@N07/sets/72157625670238302/with/5290139447/
These are my changes: I've made it bigger (longer and wider), I've made it all buttonholes (8 at each end) and I tie it up with cuff link style buttons, that is a great improvement because it allows for many more variations. I've used kimono silk (two lengths of each fabric).
Final size is 114 x 66 cm.
First buttonhole is at 6,5 cm from edge, then the buttonhole (for my buttons) is 3 cm wide, and between buttonholes there are 3,5 cm distance.
Thank you again for sharing!
Cristina
I finished mine, check i out on my blog!!! Made a girl (5T) version. Really easy as you said, only headache were the buttonholes :) TKS!

As you suggested on my blog, I made a modelling session with the proud owner of the cape :) Check it out here: http://maomaocrafts.blogspot.com/2011/01/multi-reversible-cape-modelling.html

hello
ReplyDeleteI want to know, you make six buttonholes and you put twelve buttons
or you first make the buttonholes and buttons on each tissue and after you sew together
thank you for your reply
carine Lyon in France
sorry for my bad english
You just make all the six button holes first (3 on each opposite side) then after that, you just sew 6 buttons on each 3 holes, it is for the reversible effect, if you don't want it reversible, just sew 3 buttons on each side
ReplyDeletemba lia,
ReplyDeleteaku bikin multi reversible cape dari tutorialnya mba lia. thx for sharing.
